Frequently Asked Questions About Non-English Language Typesetting

Q :Why is typesetting with Chinese, Japanese and Korean more involved comparing with that in English?

A :Chinese, Japanese and Korean are characterized as Character Languages. They use the so-called double bite fonts when they are stored in computers. One character is equivalent to two English letters memory usage wise. Some software applications do not support this type of fonts at all. Therefore, certain special and unique methods must be employed to accomplish the computer aided typesetting tasks. For example, since the fonts are part of the operating system of the computers, one often needs to purposely configure the computer operating system so that the two-byte fonts can be properly presented.

Q :Where do I obtain Chinese, Japanese or Korean fonts?

A :Latest versions of Windows (Windows 2000, XP and later) and Apple computers’ operating systems all come with Chinese, Japanese and Korean fonts, although the number of the types of fonts is rather limited. However, typical installation of the system will not install these fonts to save the computer memory. You need to install these fonts if you plan to process these languages with your computers. Refer to the installation instructions for the special font installation. You may contact us if you need other fonts that do not come with your system. PLG has in house developed over a hundred fonts. You can purchase PLG fonts for your special use. We will provide detailed instructions on how these fonts be installed and configured in your computer.

Q :I prefer not to reconfigure my operating system or install less commonly used fonts. I do not have software applications that handle character languages as well. Is it still possible for me to read Chinese, Japanese or Koreas in my computer?

A :Yes. For the finished file product produced by PLG, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, which were presented and stored in the form of fonts, are all converted to high resolution vector graphics. The presentation of graphics is not font dependent. However, to achieve this, more typesetting processes will have to be called on and often times more than one software application will have to be involved.
